Sun's out, toes out? Yes — but first, you need a solid sandal lineup. The once-mocked "mandal" has officially found its footing, with flip-flops, slides, fisherman sandals, and strappy leather styles that even sandal skeptics may be tempted to try. As a born-and-raised city dweller and former sandal hater, I can confirm: after testing dozens of pairs, the category has never looked better.

The sandal boom makes sense. Blame the post-pandemic comfort era, the return of fisherman sandals, or the viral pull of luxury flip-flops. But the simplest explanation might be menswear's roomier proportions. Pleated trousers, loose jeans, and relaxed summer suiting all look better with an easy leather sandal — whether it's a sleek thong, a polished slide, or a gladiator-inspired strap design.

Style isn't the only draw. Brands like Keen, Merrell, and Chaco are making rugged sandals with real traction, durable straps, and trail-ready soles, while recovery sandals now offer the kind of cushioning, stability, and arch support that makes every step feel blessedly low-effort.

To find the best sandals for men, we tested dozens of pairs across city streets, trails, beaches, and everyday summer errands. These are the ones worth slipping into.

For more of our extensively tested men's shoe coverage, see our articles on the best men's dress shoes, best men's slippers, and the best men's shoes for the office.

What to look for in the best sandals for men

Arch Support: This is especially important if you live in sandals all summer. Think about how long and how often you'll wear them, how active you'll be, and whether you have any foot conditions, like plantar fasciitis. An APMA-approved sandal, like the Chaco Z/1 Classic, is a safe place to start. Recovery sandals, like the OOFOS OOriginal Plus, can also provide strong arch support and help redistribute weight, which may ease pain from plantar fasciitis or fallen arches. Just remember that foam midsoles compress over time, so replace them when you start to feel less midfoot support. If you prefer minimalist or zero-drop sandals, ease into them gradually, especially if it's your first pair, to avoid pain or injury.

Size & Width: Know your foot width, fellas. If your feet are neutral width, most men's sandals should work for you, but sizing still matters. Read our testing notes and check the brand or retailer's size guide before buying. Some brands offer wide widths, while others simply have roomier toe boxes. Customer reviews can be helpful, but they often conflict, so treat them as added context rather than the final word. Brand size charts and fit guides are your best bet.

Materials & Features: Choose materials based on how you plan to wear your sandals. Breathable mesh uppers, like those on the Merrell Maipo Explorer Sieve, help keep feet cool in closed-toe styles. High-quality leather and suede, like our picks from Allen Edmonds and G.H. Bass, can be durable, breathable, and more polished. Adjustable straps, cord systems, and toggles, like those on the Hoka Hopara, help create a secure fit. Molded heel cups and footbeds add comfort and stability by keeping your feet in place.

Outsoles: Match the outsole to the terrain. For trails, look for lug traction. For poolside wear, a patterned outsole should provide enough grip on wet surfaces. More rugged sandals may have flexible outsoles designed for stability and traction, while recovery sandals often use rocker bottoms and cushioned midsoles to make walking easier. A flat outsole with minimal traction is fine for casual wear — just don't take it on a hike.

How we tested the best sandals for men

To find the best sandals for men this season, we tested more than 30 pairs over three weeks. As a shopping writer who has tested sandals from top footwear brands for more than 15 years, I came into the process with a few trusted styles and brands in mind, but every sandal on this list was put through real wear testing.

What we considered:

  • Comfort: We looked for sandals that felt supportive, secure, and comfortable after hours of wear.
  • Fit: We paid attention to sizing, width, adjustability, and whether each pair needed a break-in period.
  • Construction: We evaluated materials, stitching, soles, straps, and overall durability.
  • Terrain: We tested sandals where they were meant to be worn, including light hiking trails, smooth pavement, grass fields, and sandy beaches.
  • Style: We considered current summer 2026 menswear trends, versatility, and how easily each pair could fit into a real wardrobe.

After testing, we found more strong contenders than we could fit here, so this final list focuses on the best options for different needs, activities, and style preferences. We also researched each brand to make sure our picks came from reliable footwear makers.

Comfort and style are personal, so use our testing notes, along with brand and retailer sizing details, to find the pair that works best for you.

Best overall: Birkenstock Gizeh Essentials Sandals

Birkenstock Gizeh Essentials Sandals

One of the most popular footwear brands in recent years for summer sandal staples has more than Arizonas to offer. The Gizeh Essential is an unexpected style choice that taps into the most current menswear trends and provides a minimalist silhouette for outfit versatility, all with the same footbed and sole that made the Arizona Essentials a new massive success.

Birkenstock's first thong sandal, originally released in 1983, has more of a niche cult following than the Arizona slide that reached sandal stardom in more recent times. But the Gizeh — especially in glossed-up, waterproof EVA — has a sleeker, dare I say sexier, toe-show appeal. The Gizeh Essentials has the same perks as its double-buckle sibling: a light-as-air feel, Birkenstock's signature footbed with arch support, protective edges, and shock-absorbing cushioning. The big difference is the modern, minimal upper, which looks far less bulky and pairs better with stylish summer slacks. I also like the extra forefoot wiggle room, which adds flexibility without sacrificing a secure fit.

There's a time and place for Birkenstock's traditional cork footbeds — shearling-lined Bostons make great house slippers — but for summer sandals, I don't love stiff cork slapping against poolside pavement with every step. The Gizeh Essentials' EVA construction gives you Birkenstock comfort without weighing down your beach bag or weekender. And when your summer plans include splash zones, water-friendly sandals are a plus. From strolling through grassy parks to sprinting to my corner bodega in the rain, I couldn't find much fault in the Gizeh Essentials as a casual, everyday sandal. For guys who don't usually like a thong sandal, I had the same concern, but the toe post didn't cause any discomfort after multiple hours of wear.

The Gizeh Essentials won't replace a technical sandal for niche outdoor activities, but for an under-$50 pair you don't have to baby, it's an easy summer staple.

What we don't like

When you need a reliable leather loafer, you get G.H. Bass Weejuns. And for summer, the same logic applies to the Reed Fisherman Mini Lug sandals. With caged sandals everywhere this season, G.H. Bass still hits that great-price, great-quality sweet spot.

The Reed is easy to dress up or down, with a shiny leather upper, sleek whale-tail buckle, contrast welt stitching, and a lug sole that makes the classic fisherman sandal feel more modern. The plush leather footbed also has more memory foam cushioning than I expected, giving it a more premium feel.

I was prepared for a rough break-in period — G.H. Bass loafers are known for it — but these didn't cause a blister or bruise, even after six straight hours of wear. The lined upper felt smooth, the heel cup didn't scratch, and the fit ran true to size for me. You won't get sports-sandal arch support, but the rubber lug sole has enough flex for walking while still protecting your feet on gravel and stone.

They're polished, durable, and built to wear in nicely with every summer scuff.

Best recovery: OOFOS OOriginal PLUS Men's Sandals

What we don't like

con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Thicker upper strap might be too snug for wide width feet

Oh man, I knew this one was going to be a foot pleaser. After years of wearing unsupportive dress shoes while standing all day and running across town, slipping into a good recovery sandal feels like sinking into a new mattress that makes you audibly ooh and ahh. OOFOS' new OOriginal Plus delivers exactly that.

This latest recovery sandal has even more of the brand's OOfoam technology for shock absorption, plus raised edges for stability, a wider upper strap for a secure fit, and a featherlight feel. The rocker bottom redistributes pressure from the heel and ball of the foot with ease, and the slimmed-down toe post didn't cause the discomfort I usually expect from flip-flops. Of all the men's sandals I tested, these had the best arch support, making them especially appealing for anyone dealing with plantar fasciitis.

They're not trying to be the most stylish sandals in the lineup, but the extra height and wide straps make them feel current enough to wear with wide-leg trousers or lazy Sunday sweats. Ten out of ten, no notes.

Best for walking: Hoka Hopara Men's Sandals

Hoka sandals

Hoka sneakers get the summer treatment with breezy ventilation, quick-drying neoprene, and a comfy sole that will make you want to up your step count. The design details throughout the shoe make these walking sandals an eye-catching option that'll bring on the compliments.

Hoka redefines the idea of the dad sandal with a foam-stacked, fisherman-like, sandal-shoe hybrid that's been building a lot of buzz lately, even though the Hopara style originally launched in 2020.

These summer-ready Hoka men's sandals feature a supportive, thick midsole, comparable to the brand's Skyflow sneaker style, an APMA-approved everyday running shoe with a 5mm drop that hits the sweet for daily walks with balanced cushioning and neutral stability.

For ease in mobility, the Hopara's quick-lace toggle system, combined with neoprene lining and collar, provides that glove-like fit of a wet suit with no break-in woes, while the shoe's rubber lug outsole has that grip to step in style.

Sure, you can buy the black version, but the crisp, white colorway nicely highlights the superior design details that you're spending your hard-earned money on. A good white summer shoe provides a blank canvas for a variety of outfit occasions, so there's a good chance these top walking sandals will earn their value by cost-per-wear calculations by the end of the summer season.

Best for water: Keen Uneek Sneaker Sandals

Keen Uneek Sneaker Sandals

Keen Uneek Sneakers are combine the functionality outdoor adventurists want with the on-trend style widely embraced by the modern man seeking minimal toe exposure. Over 10 years since its creation, the Uneek has finally peaked as a cool-guy status symbol that's well-deserved, and bound to sell out quickly.

What we don't like

con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Break-in period can cause mild discomfort and requires a few wears for ideal fit

Cords for comfort? After three years of development, Keen introduced the Uneek in the early 2010s with a corded upper that molds to the foot instead of boxing it in like traditional cut-and-sewn fabric.

Yes, it looks jarring at first — but that's the point. The outdoor "ugly shoe" has become a Gorpcore staple, and the Uneek's strange little cord cage is exactly what gives it its charm. The sneaker-sandal hybrid is well-ventilated, adaptable, breathable, and covered enough for guys who don't want their toes fully out.

The recycled, water-repelling polyester cord is the key to both its oddball look and its function. Water and small debris pass through easily, while the quick-drying microfiber helps keep things from feeling swampy. During testing, the glove-like fit and stability surprised me, especially with the help of the adjustable lace-lock toggle. It's not every day you ponder the feel of cords wrapped around your feet like a fishing net — but that's why I love my job.

The upper dries quickly in the sun, but the sole is the real standout. The flexible yet durable outsole has razor siping for extra traction on wet terrain, while the supportive midsole and solid arch support make these freaky little sandals comfortable enough for regular wear. The only caveat: the cords need a brief break-in period to adapt to your foot, though it's more likely to cause slight discomfort than any real damage.

What we don't like

con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Pricey option for leather sandals

Everything old is new again. Fisherman sandals are a classic menswear shoe, but summer 2026 might be their biggest season yet. After resurfacing in spring 2018 runway collections from Hermès and Prada, the coastal closed-toe sandal has hit high tide, helped along by dad-shoe fatigue and the ongoing obsession with "old money" dressing. Timing is everything, even for men's sandal trends.

Ancient Greek Sandals takes the traditional route with the Nestoras. Made with unlined, raw-edged leather in a clean fisherman shape, it feels refined without looking fussy. The architectural curves pair beautifully with straight-leg trousers or a barrel-shaped pant that plays off the sandal's lines.

I didn't have a summer wedding or suave-suit moment during testing, but the Nestoras instantly sharpened a simple pair of white jeans. The angular sole adds to its minimalist, expensive-looking appeal. Just note that it runs a tad small, so half sizes may want to size up.

This isn't the sandal for sports-sandal bells and whistles — nor is it trying to be. The Nestoras is a splurge that reminds you of the joy of dressing up for a summer wedding, vacation dinner, or romantic date night. And as the natural leather develops a patina, it only gets more unique.

Best hiking: Danner Joseph Leather Sandals

Danner
Danner Joseph Leather Sandals

Danner never lets the rugged man down with over 90 years in outdoor footwear excellence. The Joseph leather sandal shows the company's devotion to modernity in utility and style with an outsole that keeps the light hiker move comfortably and look great off the trail.

What we like

Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Vibram rubber outsoles with lug traction ensure no terrain is too tough for your summer treks
Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Design details of a magnetic closure and padded leather heel strap both elevate the hiking sandal with a premium feel
Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. The secure strap system makes them less heavy than expected

What we don't like

con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Some users found the strap system to be difficult and strap holders to dig into wide width fee

The Portland-based boot brand that's been around for nearly a century still knows how to make you want to take a hike — even in sandals. Danner's Joseph sandal has a Vibram lug outsole for rocky trails, premium leather straps, and a magnetic buckle that's easy to use and, frankly, fun to play with. The brand's 827 last also cups the foot to keep it locked in for solid stability.

Because the Joseph still leaves plenty of your foot exposed, I'd save it for lighter hikes and stick to full-coverage shoes for tougher terrain. It also nails the off-duty outdoorsman look with twill utility pants or beat-up chinos, while adding some edge to a more polished outfit.

Despite the rugged build, the Joseph feels impressively lightweight on foot, and the plush heel strap adds comfort. I didn't experience the side-strap discomfort some reviewers mentioned, nor did the straps feel too short. That said, these run a little large and only come in full sizes, so size down if you're between sizes. Wider feet may find them a bit narrow, but Danner's 365-day warranty takes some of the pressure off.

OluKai is a sandal insider's footwear brand of choice for premium quality with the utmost comfort, and the Shoreline flip-flop style exemplifies the brand's devotion to premium quality, comfort, and laid-back style. OluKai isn't just another flip-flop brand. The 20-plus-year-old Hawaiian-inspired label has built a devoted following for quality, craftsmanship, and comfort — all of which show up in the Shoreline. Originally launched in 2024 as a collaboration with StanCraft Boats, the sandal has the smooth precision you'd expect from something inspired by a luxury handcrafted boat.

The footbed is oh-so-smooth, with just enough arch support and room for slightly wider feet. But it's the little details that make the Shoreline a shoo-in: refined leather straps with clean stitching, an easy fit that hugs the foot, and a soft nylon toe post that feels like next to nothing from the first wear.

Style it with cuffed olive cotton pants, a striped tee, a chambray shirt, and a navy double-breasted blazer to take your flip-flops off the shore and out for the evening.

Ideal for walking with complete toe coverage, Merrell's Maipo Explorer Sieve adventure-ready sandal offers a spacious toe box, a locked-in fit with its bungee lacing system, and a flexible-yet-protective midsole that easily adapts to your movement for maximum stability and comfort. Looking for the breeze of a sandal with the support of a trail shoe? That's where Merrell's Maipo Explorer comes in. This sandal-sneaker hybrid keeps more than your toes covered, with a cushioned midsole and grippy rubber outsole that add stability and shock-absorbing comfort.

Merrell's mix of elastic and mesh gives the shoe a more sneaker-like look while keeping it functional. The stretch collar feels comfortable from the jump, and the bungee lace system with a toggle makes it easy to lock in the fit.

Go stealth in black, or choose a lighter colorway to show off the construction. Originally released in May 2025, this closed-toe sandal uses quick-drying materials for light water activities and skews slightly wide, with plenty of toe-box room. It's a strong do-it-all summer shoe for anyone who wants outdoor utility without cramping their feet — or their style.

Xero Genesis Sandals for Men

If you haven't been roped into purchasing Xero Shoes' Genesis sandal, consider this a sign to smash that add-to-cart button. Not everyone wants a men's sandal stacked with cushioning and a chunky outsole. For barefoot minimalists, Xero Shoes' Genesis is the champ. The barely-there rope sandal has been around for a few years, but for summer 2026, it feels especially timely with the rise of corded accessories and slim, stripped-back footwear.

Admittedly, I'm not usually a barefoot-shoe guy, but I couldn't help liking the under-$50 Genesis I ordered online. There's no break-in period, thanks to the soft rope toe post and adjustable T-strap, which is easy to dial in. Once secured, the contoured heel cup cradles the foot, while the lightly textured footbed helps keep you from slipping around on the thin, flexible sole.

Whether you're into the grounded feel of a minimalist sandal or just need a beach pair that won't weigh down your bag, the Genesis is an easy, casual option that doesn't disappoint.

An adventure sandal that also suits city living, Chaco's long-beloved Z/1 Classic continues to be a champion in the men's sandal market for it's podiatrist-approved foot support, durable outsole with clever traction design, and a serious adjustable strap system that keeps your feet in position for any and all activities on your agenda for the day.

What we don't like

con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Adjustable strap system can be difficult to adjust for ideal fit, and possibly cause abrasion on toes from strap movement on toes and forefoot

For decades, practical dads and serious outdoorsy guys have praised the Chaco Z/1 Classic as the ultimate men's sandal for support, durability, and reliability. Turns out, they were on to something. From the secure adjustable straps to the arch-supporting footbed and grippy outsole, every part of this sandal feels built to last.

As the adventure-sandal aesthetic has gone mainstream, this Chaco-curious shopper happily strapped into the Z/1 Classic. There's nothing flimsy about the webbing, and that secure fit helps the sturdy sole feel less heavy underfoot. Yes, these are made for the great outdoors, but they also work as city sandals that protect your feet from urban grime.

One note: take the time to adjust the straps properly. Wear them too tight, and you may hit some ouch-worthy abrasion after a few thousand steps. Once you get the fit right and break them in, though, they're easy to love. The toe box also feels generous, and Chaco offers wide widths, which many sandal brands still skip.

Menswear dress codes are more relaxed than ever, especially in summer, but there's a fine line between stylish and too casual. A suede sandal lands on the right side of it for beach weddings, garden parties, and sunset drinks by the pool. Allen Edmonds' Seagrove sandal is an easy choice, with a classic two-strap shape softened up in supple suede from the straps to the footbed.

The leather-welt detail gives it a polished touch, while the rubber outsole keeps it practical. I also liked the relaxed fit, which gave my neutral-width feet a bit of wiggle room. Hidden Velcro under the suede straps makes the fit adjustable without disrupting the clean look, and the ultrasoft suede meant there was no real break-in period. Just note that this style ran much larger than expected for me, so I sized down a full size.

The Seagrove adds refinement to a T-shirt and jeans as easily as it works with seersucker trousers and a breezy button-down. Allen Edmonds may still be a go-to for the business bro, but this sandal proves the brand can do relaxed summer style, too.
